When I set out to earn my Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, I did not know where the journey would lead. My aspirations were vague; I wanted to work in a medium-sized public library that was within driving distance of my parents’ house. From my previous jobs in sales and healthcare, as well as my volunteer work with various organizations, I knew I would find the interactions in a public library both rewarding and challenging.

As I began my studies, I discovered which areas within the field agreed with me, and which did not. Turns out that being a lifelong bookworm was not the sole qualification for the tasks I was given. Even my Bachelor’s degree in English had not quite prepared me. For example, research was a skill that did not come naturally and occasionally left me frustrated. However, I enjoyed organizing information, as well as analyzing and improving processes.

While attending graduate school, I worked for Texas Outdoor Power Equipment Distributors or TOP Equipment. It started as a part-time office job performing a variety of tasks. It wasn’t long before I began making connections between aspects of my coursework and my office work. An incredible amount of the knowledge and skills I gained through my classes was translatable to the work I found myself doing on a daily basis.

As I was given more responsibility at TOP Equipment, I felt both challenged and encouraged. Almost exactly what I had been seeking through a career in public libraries. So, when the opportunity for a full-time position at the company was offered, I had little trouble accepting. And while I have not completely given up the title of librarian, I look forward to continuing on this journey I have begun.
